Abstract
Triphala is a cornerstone polyherbal formulation in Ayurvedic medicine, consisting of three fruits: Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula). This in vivo study investigated Triphala's prebiotic potential and its effects on the human gut microbiome.
Study Design
A 12-week randomized controlled trial with 45 healthy adults. The treatment group received 2g of standardized Triphala powder daily, while the control group received placebo.
Results
Microbiome Changes
- Bifidobacterium: 42% increase in abundance (p < 0.01)
- Lactobacillus: 37% increase in abundance (p < 0.01)
- Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio: Normalized toward healthy baseline
Additional Benefits
- Improved bowel regularity in 89% of participants
- Reduced inflammatory markers (CRP decreased by 18%)
- Enhanced antioxidant capacity (ORAC values increased by 23%)
Conclusion
Triphala demonstrates significant prebiotic activity and positively modulates the gut microbiome. These findings support its traditional use as a daily Rasayana for digestive health.
